Twitter and ESPN?

Twitter is an amazing product. I know we’ve talked about it before, but now I have a different reason why this phenomenon is so unusual. ESPN and Twitter are lovers. That’s the only way to describe it. The question I am asking if anyone knows is, does Twitter actually have anything to do with it? If not, which is what I am assuming as of now, then they have the greatest advertising program in the world today.

Sportcenter every day mentions to follow them on Twitter, which is already a pretty big deal. Now, for the last couple of weeks I believe, Mike and Mike have been bringing this website up seemingly once a day for a segment complaining about Mark Schlereth’s twitter. I am not saying these segments aren’t entertaining because they are. But, has there ever been a product that is so often mentioned in a way that makes it sound they paid for a sponsorship, but most likely didn’t? I mean it’s perfect because ESPN benefits from having a Twitter account and promoting it so why would Twitter do anything to ESPN to mention it. ESPN is eventually going to buy Twitter probably, and then we will be forced to follow every Yankee update that occurs every 10 minutes.

Twitter Is A Strange Land

Twitter can be quite an interesting experience. I am in control of the majority of the tweets you see if you follow us, and I have been trying to keep updated this past week. I can’t decide if it is an amazing tool, or a waste of time. Part of me thinks it’s mostly people trying to get you to their website. Okay, fine, that’s part of what we do, I’ll admit it, but it’s not because we are spamming. Really, our whole goal is to stimulate conversation so naturally we want readers to respond.  Still, I am trying to add more messages that actually give people information and not just links to here.

The other part of me is just amazed at who you can connect with. We recently sent a reply to Chauncey Billups. If you know me, he is easily my favorite player of all time. I had an unhealthy obsession for a while. Not creepy, but to the point where I was blind to anything he did wrong on the court. When he won the finals MVP in 2004, I nearly lost my mind.

More background? My fantasy teams are usually named CB1MVP. My XBOX Live name is CB1MVP.  I have a picture of him in my tennis bag when I play to remind me the right attitude to have…okay you get the point. Only through Twitter could you actually interact with someone you look up to like Chauncey. It’s funny though, whenever I have had someone reply that is famous you get a rush, but really, they don’t know crap about who you are. It’s not really interacting. Somehow, Twitter manages to give that illusion though, and I can really see why it’s fun for us fans.

On that note, I will never have a personal account. I like to follow people through our little website/blog, but I can’t see myself seriously updating what I am doing. Still, it’s pretty cool to see how many athletes and celebrities are taking the time to reach out to their fans.

In the end, I don’t want to lie to one of my heroes so let’s get CB1 to surpass the boys like Bosh and Villanueva. Follow Chauncey here.

Awesome Sports Figure – OchoCinco

Ocho-Cinco not taking anymore of this crap!

Ocho-Cinco not taking anymore of this crap!

Come on, this was too easy, with his most recent comments about the NFL and Twitter. I’ve always been a non-twitter guy. (Follow us now!) But, Ocho Cinco is taking a stand! Why wouldn’t the NFL want their players to be randomly saying things that are incomprehensible during games?! In any case, Chad Johnson – that’s right his real name – is our awesome sports figure today.

More LiveTweeting, Day 3

Well, we’re back with some more fascination tweets from ESPN’s David Thorpe.  Let’s get right to it.

It will be interesting to see if NBA players will foul Hansbrough often as a rookie. He’s a foul magnet, but will he be as a rookie?

Well, it is the NBA, so no he won’t be, that’s obvious. Still, foul magnet? Isn’t that giving him a little too much credit? He isn’t the next Shaq.

Suton has a lot of holes in his game. Izzo is a genius.

Suton? Holes? No way! I thought he was going to be an all-star in the NBA! Listen, he honestly wasn’t that great at MSU. He was good in the system. Reminds me of a guy like Brian Butch for my Badgers. Someone who was solid, but would be incredibly worse if in another system.

I have to go home to see my family. Sorry to cut this short.

What? No!!! What a slacker. I need my tweets to tell me if Roy Hibbert is getting faster throughout the day or eating a lot according to Coach Thorpe!

Livetweeting Isn’t ESPN’s Strength

It’s a tough job to have to live blog anything. Now, we can see David Thorpe “livetweeting” the NBA summer leagues. This has got to be a tough assignments. It’s one thing to attend the summer league, but to actually have to make insightful comments…ouch. Still, it is perfect for us to comment about:

Ryan Anderson hits back to back 3’s. He’ll play some this year I think.

This is based on absolutely nothing, but I don’t think he’ll play much this year.

Robert Swift may have the most ironic name in the league.

Huh? Anyone want to explain this one to me?

Someone needs to tell Courtney Fells that electing to take step back 22 footers is not how you make a team.

That someone is you David…tell him!

Once again, I’m impressed with Coach Ewing. Smart things are just spewing from his mouth.

Like? Anything? It doesn’t get much broader than that.

Guys are bent over and in unathletic positions, and they lose their balance.

That’s pretty graphic right there. Can we get a better explanation when dealing with this “unathletic” positions?

Gotta love pg’s who turn down the open layup to get a teammate a dunk. Nice job Kevin Krueger!

No, you don’t gotta love those pg’s. I love the guys who have an OPEN layup and just make the basket!

That’s it for now.  I’ll be back with day 3 of Thorpe’s tweets on Thursday.

Islanders Worst, Tweet-Ups, Malking Scores A Lot

The Sabres and Panthers are two teams that are now out of the playoffs. Despite both teams winning last night, they were both eliminated. The NHL this year has been very entertaining to watch because of how close the playoff races have been. We are closing in on 5 days to the start of the playoffs!!! Oh, and the Islanders struggled this year. Sorry to all of you who suffered at Nassau this year.

TNT & Twitter, NCAA Top 25, Shaq to Mavs?, SEC Guys

Social networking sites are growing more popular everyday.  Therefore, it’s no surprise that TNT is getting involved by setting up accounts on Twitter and Facebook to help promote the “40 games in 40 nights” slogan regarding the NBA playoffs.  It’s not a bad idea as the anchors and analysts who cover the playoff games are pretty much celebrities as it is so they’re sure to get some good follower numbers.

“Loser Points” analysis, Twitter & the NHL, Playoff Race

As you know, points are earned in the NHL by winning a game or losing in overtime or a shootout.  This never really made sense to me.  Why would the losing team be rewarded at all?  They lost!  Anyway, the first article here shows what it would be like if those “loser points” were left out from the standings this year.

Linked on Hockey

-Interesting point about the NHL’s poinst-based standings.  Looks like “loser points” aren’t a very big deal.  Maybe they should get rid of them!

-Just showing how cool Twitter supposedly is…  That’s why you should be following us!

Twitter April Fools, Overrated at UNC, Evans To The NBA

Oh, Twitter.  When will you stop your madness?  Now Hasheem Thabeet is getting into the action by “Tweeting” his april fools joke that he failed a drug test and won’t play in the final four. Is it bad that I think this is actually pretty funny? I agree with the post that we linked that UCONN staff will be most likely telling him to stop, but we have to get more creative with our Twitter account. I still don’t get the point totally, but if we can get a story once a day about an athlete’s creative tweet, I’ll support it. If nothing else, it makes us forget about all the negative news out there.

Cuban Tweeting, CP4 Is Smart, Draft Stocks

I still don’t get the whole Twitter thing, but it seems to me that it is just another spot to get into trouble.  What is in it for these athletes and owners?  Well, I’m sure Cuban is one of the few owners, but it doesn’t seem to be worth it.  He makes it obvious that he doesn’t care how much he’s fined.  Still, I’m surprised so many professional athletes use the site.  It is cool to connect with the fans, but you have to be careful with what you say.
