Artest Reenacts Palace Brawl

I found this video over at Fanhouse and I’m not sure if it makes me like Ron Artest more or hate him more.  He just seems like a jackass.  But it is funny how he screwed the Pacers franchise because of this story!

Pistons, Dumars Get Unfair Treatment

If you happen to make it to foxsports.com today you will see a link to this video. In it, Randy Hill talks for 1:45 about the situation in Detroit. I try not to get my hometown teams too involved in this site, but I couldn’t let this one go. I have four beefs with this little segment.

  1. Hill mentions that Curry never had much of a chance: This is a common thought, but let’s all be honest, Curry was brutal as the head coach. He would use the oddest of substition and lineup patterns, he somehow managed to piss off Rip Hamilton (by supposedly not personally talking to him), and he got swept by, albeit, a better Cavs team.
  2. Oh my goodness, Darko is back! Hill tries to paint a picture that this is pretty much all Dumars’ fault.  Why? Well, he picked Darko over Carmelo and Bosh. For the last time, the Pistons don’t win a championship without that ill-fated move. There is no Rasheed Wallace that pushed them over the top. It was one pick in 2003 (6 years ago), can we move on? Furthermore, don’t be surprised if Bosh is wearing a Pistons uniform next season.
  3. Bill Laimbeer will not coach this team. There is no way that they would try another rookie NBA coach. Not going to happen so why even bring it up on a national website?
  4. Hill doesn’t admit that Dumars has a plan. Sure, he traded my favorite player ever in Chauncey for a team intrusion that is AI, but if he doesn’t make that move there is not much of a future here. They would have lost before the NBA Finals, and they would not have nearly the cap room they have now, meaning long rebuilding process.

The fact is Dumars could turn out to be a very smart man. He brings in a veteran coach in Doug Collins, makes a trade for someone north of the border *cough, signs Gordon and Villanueva, and the biggest down year is losing in the first round of the playoffs.  That sounds like a pretty amazing rebuilding process to me.

Breaking: Allen Iverson Gone For Season

We just learned that AI is done for the season, and he is most likely done as a Piston.

“After talking with Allen and our medical staff, we feel that resting Allen for the remainder of the season is the best course of action at this time,” said Dumars. “While he has played in our last three games, he is still feeling some discomfort and getting him physically ready to compete at the level he is accustomed to playing this late in the season does not seem possible at this point.”

It seems painfully obvious that Dumars went to AI and said “either you shut your mouth or we should mutually agree to sit you for the year.” In any case, Iverson has done himself no favors for picking up a big contract this year. Detroit won’t resign him. After a year that he struggled both offensively and defensively, who wants him? His most recent comments, although blown a little out of proportion, were ridiculous in any sense. No team wants to deal with a guy whose talent has dwindled to a point that he isn’t even a clear cut starter on an elite team. It will be interesting to see what happens from here.

On Our Minds

  • This just in: Tiger Woods is not that good. Ok, I’m kidding. He’s the greatest golf has ever seen. Truthfully though, I’m rather disappointed. Losing in the second round of match play? How do you do that when the fact that you’re Tiger gives you an automatic three-hole lead? Losing in the second round probably cost the tournament and its sponsors millions considering how few spectators stuck around for the weekend…not to mention I was stuck watching a Geoff Ogilvy vs. Paul Casey 36-hole snooze fest on Sunday. Tiger, if you haven’t noticed, the very relevance of your sport depends on you being around for weekend play. Next time you won’t be, let us all know so we can stop caring until you’re on the first tee again.

  • Why haven’t the Suns involved Shaq in the offense until now?  Yea, I understand Amar’e should be the first option.  However, until recently, they didn’t even bother to look for the Big Cactus underneath the basket.  He was getting most of his points on put backs and broken plays.  If you’re going to keep a guy on the team who makes that much dough, it might have been worth giving him this many touches at the beginning of the season.  Again, Phoenix is just realizing another way they have under-utilized talent. Hopefully it’s not too late to make the playoff push now that Nash and Amar’e are out.

  • One of the NBA games yesterday stood out in my mind.  The Pistons outplayed the Celtics en route to a ten point win.  Sure, Boston was playing without KG, but a Pistons team minus Allen Iverson seems to be working out just fine.  Wins at Orlando and now in Boston must make people think that this team may have some life left, especially when Iverson assumes his new role as 6th man beginning Tuesday against Denver.

  • Yesterday, we learned of two missing NFL players. Both were passengers on a boat that has gone missing off the coast of Clearwater, Florida.  As of this writing, no new updates have been released, which clearly is not a good sign.  So many of the top stories in the sports world revolve around drug use, violence, and other crimes painting sports as a form of entertainment, which fans can watch in amusement.  Then, we are brought back to reality when we hear about these sports stars facing real tragedy.  Let us hope that this story ends in something other than the worst case scenario.  If for nothing else, so we fans can go back to following the sports world as simply entertainment.
