Awesome Sports Figure – Joe Sakic
Anyone who knows me realizes this is a tough decision. I mean Sakic played for the team I hated more than anything back in the late 90s. I always said the same thing since I was a little kid, “I don’t dislike Joe Sakic.” I never had an issue with the guy. He was a class act as far as I could tell and he was a great leader. Some people will call him boring, but that’s what made him unhateable. (Yea that’s a word.) Congrats on a great career, he will be missed.

Hossa For 12 Years
Marian Hossa signed with the Blackhawks yesterday for 12 years. The first thing that came to my mind was, “isn’t he like 30?” Well, he isn’t “like” 30, he is 30. This means that he is under contract until he is 42. That’s interesting that Chicago thinks he will be around that long. On the other hand, it may be that the NHL has something that I don’t know about that makes this 12 year idea something that will never actually happens. If someone knows more about this, let us know. In any case, here are a few Hossa gems from SI.com:
“Now I don’t have to worry about dealing with it year-to-year. I’m set for 12 years. That will make it easier and I can focus on hockey,” Hossa said.
There’s no reason to bash the guy for this. It makes sense. As a Wings fan, part of me wanted him back, but I realized it was a long shot. Why? Mr. Hossa explains…
“I had a great time in Detroit. … But with today’s economy and the salary cap, it’s really hard to sign star players,” Hossa said.
Thanks for clearing that up Marian. Anyone else find that comment a little snooty? Yeah, I used that word. I feel like he’s just saying “I am an amazing player so it’s tough to sign me.” It’s just that quotes like that are usually reserved for GMs or even agents, but the players themselves? Star players are supposed to show up when the pressure is on, unlike what Hossa did in the finals this year.
“Somebody just couldn’t be able to sign and I guess that was me,”
Well, it was your decision. I know he’s trying to say the right things, but just be honest. If you really wanted to stay in Detroit, you could’ve taken less money. Just say that Chicago gave you a great offer, not that it was the Wing’s GM’s fault for not being able to sign you, the almighty Hossa.
The Blackhawks believe Hossa is the difference maker that get them to the finals and bring a Stanley Cup back to Chicago for the first time since 1961.
Well, he’s failed at that for two seasons (Bazing!) so you guys are most likely looking at a drought that extends through 2020. That’s 60 years! Ouch, sorry Chicago.

Alex the “Great” is gone, needs some work
This couldn’t make me happier. I’m not even a big hockey fan (just an enormous sports fan in general obviously), and I’m exstatic that Alexander Ovechkin is out of the playoffs. This guy bothers me in the same way Lebron James bothers me. Both have been given a crown so early in their careers, and neither has done anything in the post season yet. They are like the same guy in different sports…both tremendous individual players but can’t get it done when it counts. Thus far, Ovechkin could actually learn a few things from Lebron. Read more

Playoff Attendance, NHL Awards, Recap and Predictions

The NHL Playoffs are without a doubt the best time for the sport. There are always crazy storylines and games, and this year has been no exception. We’ve seen fights, combacks, and even a buzzer beater. I’m thoroughly impressed by these Playoffs, and we’ve only seen the first round. I can’t imagine what’s in store for us as we get close to the Cup.

Round 2 of the playoffs is almost set, and now we get down to the nitty gritty of the postseason. Chicago and Anaheim moved on last night. Chicago is such a young team that you wonder if they can make the long run to the Cup, but with the way they are playing, why not?

Cheap Shot, Last Night, NHL Scheduling Issues
Hockey is a physical game, and big hits give the game character and entertainment value. However, when guys start getting carried away and pull out cheap shots, it just becomes annoying. I’m pretty sure all NHL players are appalled when the physical nature of their game is put under scrutiny. Ok, that’s fine, but when certain players decide to do stupid things (like cheap shot someone) it’s hard to ignore.

Coach Talks Give Us No Knowledge

I think it was in a book by Will Leitch over at Deadspin, that I read that Tiger Woods has literally nothing to say. He will talk and talk, but then when you really think about what he has been talking about, you realize that he said nothing of any importance. He is a complete master of manipulating reporters and fans into thinking that he gives us all valuable insight into his thoughts. Don’t get me wrong, I love Tiger, and I am more impressed than annoyed at this fact that I have come to believe.
So, when Bill Simmons wrote his latest peace over at ESPN.com I thought it was a great example of how coaches give us no additional knowledge into what is going on in the game. He focused on the NBA, as he always does, but this happens during NHL games as well. So, Simmons compiled some quotes from the coaches over the weekend, and he put his own little twist which is, as always, one of the few really entertaining things on ESPN.com. Here are some examples:
“Answer Carlisle gave: ”Well, we’re turning it over a little too much, and our shot-making hasn’t been there, and definitely we need to get better, it’s a little of everything.”‘
“Answer Spoelstra gave: ”Yeah, the spacing was OK, but we were a little careless. We had five turnovers.”
“Answer Woodson gave: ”Well, we’re still trying to just build a wall and be patient about our defense and not let them get a lot of play at the rim. They had a better third quarter. We got lax in the last five minutes, so we gotta pick it up in the fourth quarter.”
Simmons goes on to give the answer he wish that the coach would have said. The most common one is “I’m not dumb enough to answer that on live TV!” He hits the problem head on. The questions that these coaches are being asked deal with things like how they are going to cover someone, or what they need to do offensively. Coaches aren’t stupid enough to answer the question with a real answer. So, they give us fluff that you or I could make up on the spot.
I’m not trying to bash the coaches by any means. It seems like it is these national networks that actually think that we are stupid enough to think these interviews are actually helping the broadcast. I actually like the idea, but it just doesn’t work. In the end, we are better off looking at a graphic for 20 seconds then get a predetermined answer from a coach. I understand that it is supposed to bring us closer to the coaches, but there are not really fans out there thinking “Man, I really wish that I could listen to the coach tell me that the team down by 20 needs to start making shots. That would make me much happier!” Maybe there are those people, and I would love to hear what you get from these interviews. Maybe then, I could begin to enjoy them a little more.
New Toronto Team, Norris Finalists, Sharks Need Marleau
I understand that hockey is popular in Toronto, but do we need a second team up there? The only thing that I like about the idea is that it doesn’t include adding a team, it is about moving a team. Still, I don’t want to see another NHL team in Toronto just because I’m not a fan of splitting a city up into two different teams. It seems like a new team would struggle there with how long the Maple Leafs have reigned in the city.
