The Fantasy Football Personalities
Here’s a fun list of the eight personalities at every live draft. I can appreciate most of them. The girlfriend has yet to break into any of my fantasy football leagues. I think this is a good thing. But then I think it would be nice for her not to think I’m crazy when I agonize over lineups every Sunday morning. My favorite is the Confusionist. The “is (insert name here) taken?” question gets asked about 20 times in my live draft, and it never gets less annoying. It’s not like I don’t do it too, but it’s more annoying when others do it. Enjoy.

Adam Schein, I Somewhat Apologize – Thanks Derrick Mason
Last week in our first ever Fun With Schein column I got angry with the fact that he randomly threw out the fact that Derrick Mason retiring was a contract ploy and that he would be back. Now, first this is what I said.
Two problems. First, Schein has no way to actually know this. Second, if this is true, the sporting world needs to look at a dictionary. When was it okay for people to “retire” for contract negotiations? Favre has had a profound effect on the game.
Okay, so, I really just blasted the fact that he didn’t know it. But I also said that if it were true something was wrong with society. Oh boy, something is very wrong now that there are reports that Mason and the Ravens are just in a chess match. Yes, that’s right it’s a contract debacle! This mind game included retiring with no real intent to do so…awesome.
From the moment we saw the initial report that Ravens receiver Derrick Mason would retire from football, we were skeptical.
Why? Apart from the fact that we’re pretty much always skeptical, we recalled somewhat vividly Mason’s attempt earlier in the year to get another year or two added to a contract that will expire after the 2009 season.
I can’t speak for everyone, but I hate Brett Favre. Why you ask? Well, I live in Madison, WI so I had to endure the man love this guy got and still gets to a degree. Now, I hate him even more than I did because he is inspiring a generation to retire just for the fun of it! We really need to come up with a new name because the word retire simply doesn’t fit most athletes anymore. How about “unhappy” or “confused?” There is nothing witty to say, I simply want a new word because this has gotten beyond a Michael Jordon coming back. Let me repeat, people are now retiring to gain leverage in contract negotiations. Only a Michigan State grad would butcher the dictionary like that. (BA-ZING!)
Harrison Victim Shot Again?
ESPN is reporting that the man who was shot at the scene of the Marvin Harrison investigation was shot again and is in critical condition. Obviously, the actual situation is not funny. But, after being shot once, don’t you think you’d avoid those types of situations? Maybe it’s this kind of rational thinking that explains why I have not been shot even once! The best part has to be this comment…oh wait, nobody seems to care about this actual story. People have decided to bash ESPN for the Roethlisberger debacle instead!
So this is news worthy of reporting but not the Big Ben sexual assault case? Shame on you ESPN.
Hey EPSN protects who they want to and slam who they don’t. They recently put up the Pac-man video and that case was well over 2 years ago but we can’t get anything on the Big Ben case.

People are pissed about this whole victim being shot thing it seems.
Perspective: Vick’s Employer Faces Decision
A big argument in sports right now asks if Michael Vick should be allowed to play or not. He was released yesterday to basically do what he wants to do, but the NFL is far from reinstating him. So, what should happen? My persepective is that the NFL can do whatever they want and that us fans forget that players are technically employees.
An argument I have heard a few times is that Vick has paid his debt to society so he should be allowed to work his way back onto a roster. I agree that Vick has spent his time and should be free to do what he wants. However, the NFL is an employer. Think about your job. If you went to jail for doing what Vick did, do you think your employer would hire you right back? There is an image problem with the NFL already, and Vick coming back to play is not going to help that image.
On the other hand, I think the NFL would be smart to reinstate him. Simply put, he’s a big name with a lot of media love. This is where my little argument above loses some weight (I hate it when I prove myself wrong). The NFL is different than your workplace or mine. If you are working with a client, chances are that client is not going to want to work with you after a year in jail. So, the employer will most likely send you away so someone else can take over your job. The NFL is different because Vick will actually help the coverage of the league. Does anyone think that they will lose sponsors because Vick is playing? Not a chance! There is huge exposure for sponsors, especially in games that Vick could potentially play.
Having said that, I would not want the exposure Vick brings brought onto my team. If I were a GM or an owner I would avoid Vick because it doesn’t help the local product. There lies the problem. A Michael Vick would help the NFL, but hurt the team that takes a chance on him, publicity wise. It is quite a conundrum that I am glad I get to sit on the sidelines and watch it play out for a while.
Fun With Adam Schein Of FoxSports
This is the first of a possibly weekly series that will be tagged “Good Times With Schein” We do not mean to offend to anyone, especially professional contributors so let’s just have some fun shall we?
Schein’s Nine is published each…well, whenever the hell FoxSports wants to I guess. This week Schein discusses the Cardnals and Derrick Mason, among other things. Let’s get into it:
What’s the fear of standing up for the Arizona Cardinals?
Right off the bat, I’m a little scared here. There are many things to fear that he mentions, but number one is going back to bandwagon days in Arizona. Man, that was rough.
Are you worried about their bleak history? The Super Bowl loser jinx? Think the road to the big game was too fluky one year ago and there’s no chance the Cards match it?
Yes, yes, and not no chance, but little.
For the record, I don’t remotely believe Derrick Mason is retired.
Good to know. I’m assuming you have talked to him and have some sort of reasoning behind this claim.
what I really believe is Mason has been frustrated with his contract in Baltimore for a while now and “retirement” was an ultimate power play. Trust me — that’s what the Ravens believe. And that’s the wrong way for Mason to handle it.
Two problems. First, Schein has no way to actually know this. Second, if this is true, the sporting world needs to look at a dictionary. When was it okay for people to “retire” for contract negotiations? Favre has had a profound effect on the game.
I cringe and laugh every time I hear that the Bears aren’t going to use Devin Hester as a full-time return specialist. And I fall out of my chair when it gets mentioned that he will only be back on special teams in key situations.
Damn, that is a lot of emotion piled up because of a return specialist.
If it means giving him 5-10 less plays at receiver, if he’s off the field for a few Matt Forte dives so he can put a game away in the second quarter or change field position in the third, you do it.
Well, you do unless your WR core consists of Rashied Davis, Earl Bennett, Juaquin Iglesias, and Johnny Knox. The only one of those with any stats is Davis who had 445 yards receiving last year. Yea, Hester might be needed on the field sometimes.
Cooley scored just one touchdown last year and revealed that Jim Zorn promised him at least six this season. I think that will happen with everyone more comfortable in the offense.
Another fantastic prediction with nothing behind it. It’s always “I think” in this week’s article. Any reasoning?
He also told us that Jason Campbell got “conservative” last season, seemingly trying to protect his streak of not throwing a pick.
Fair enough…
I believe in Campbell but thought he was too cautious last year.
What an insight!! Where did you get that idea from? Oh yeah, Cooley told you 5 seconds earlier.
You can make excuses all you want. Fact is, it was a terrible job by Calvin Pace testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug. That’s irresponsible.
Thanks. I originally thought it was a great move by a great player. But now, I can see the light! Drugs are bad! Got it…
I can see the Lions winning five games this year. That would be a success and a step in the right direction.
But eight? No shot.
This was based off of what Al Harris told him, which was odd in itself that the Packers CB would be so positive about a division foe. Still, I’m not stupid and think that the Lions will win more than 3 or 4, but no shot at 8? That’s how you end your article? We should call the Lions management and tell them they have no shot at winning. Then we should hang up and laugh about how awesome and smart we are!
The Vikings’ season isn’t over…yet

Since we’re all already starting to count the days until the NFL season, I figured I’d throw a quick shot out to being on the good side of the banned substances policy in the NFL. There really isn’t a good side, but for Kevin and Pat Williams this is about as good as it gets. Both Minnesota Vikings pro-bowlers benefited from a judge’s ruling today that will allow them to be safe from suspension until their case is settled. Therefore, suspension-happy Roger Goodell can’t touch the Williams Wall…for now. Either way, I’m pretty happy being the Vikings fan that I am. With those two healthy and able to play in all 16, the Vikings win the division hands down. However, I will play devil’s advocate for a sentence and say that this will probably end up biting us in the ass because the Wall will be suspended smack dab in the middle of the season…unless they are somehow able to win their suit. If you can’t tell, it’s hard to be truly optimistic as a Vikings fan with our current QB situation. Here are some links:
Awesome Sports Figure – OchoCinco
Come on, this was too easy, with his most recent comments about the NFL and Twitter. I’ve always been a non-twitter guy. (Follow us now!) But, Ocho Cinco is taking a stand! Why wouldn’t the NFL want their players to be randomly saying things that are incomprehensible during games?! In any case, Chad Johnson – that’s right his real name – is our awesome sports figure today.
America’s Team; Pointless Debate
Over at ESPN.com today they are debating who “America’s Team is. Before I get a quote from each of the writers, I will say that I don’t think there is a such thing. It’s a dumb debate. So, now that we know I am totally unbiased, let’s get started!
Love them or hate them, the Cowboys are still the most polarizing franchise in the NFL.
Well, this is only true because ESPN decides to shove it down our throats.
But in an age of billion-dollar stadiums and insulated leadership, the Packers look more like America than any NFL team.
Just because it doesn’t “look” like they are a corporate monster doesn’t mean anything to the debate. I guess I don’t get what we are debating. Who, outside of Wisconsin, really roots for the Packers. Who really cares that much outside of the Wisconsin and Illinois?
Everyone loves a winner, and Pittsburgh does it in a classy and respectful manner. So what’s not to like, America?
Respectful…just like James Harrison, who decide to start throwing punches in the Super Bowl last year for no reason. Just saying!
The New England Patriots, with three Super Bowl victories and four AFC titles, have been dominant for the past nine years. Tom Brady is the embodiment of the All-American quarterback, a dashing leader who flings touchdowns and makes the ladies swoon.
“America’s Team, cheating it’s way to victory!” Has a nice ring to it eh? (Come on that was too easy.)
On second thought why did I give this article so much press? This has got to be one of the more pointless debates ever. Nobody even knows what America’s Team means. I think the Lions represent America best. We, as a country, hit rock bottom, and are now climbing our way out of the hole. Perfect!
Chucky Replaces Kornheiser in MNF Gang
Jon Gruden, Tampa Bay’s former coach, will join the Monday Night Football team this coming season. He will replace one of my personal favorites Tony Kornheiser. Kornheiser needed to step down due to his fear of flying considering the MNF schedule for this season would have forced him to the air. At any rate, he will be missed, and Gruden will have some tough shoes to fill. I think he’ll be a nice fit for the job. Read more
Would Favre even be a good fit?
With all of the excitement surrounding the possible return of Brett Favre, I’ve lost sight of what it might be like for the rest of the team if Favre did end up on the Vikings. It never occurred to me that the team dynamic could suddenly change for the worse and actually have the opposite affect of what I claimed last week. While I still hope Favre goes to Minneosta, I will play devil’s advocate and hypothesize what it might be like for Favre’s new teammates in MN. Read more
Controversial Corner: Favre to the Superbowl?

In this new weekly column, Dan will take a controversial stance on current issue or event. All visitors are encouraged to openly disagree with him by posting comments.
It’s no secret anymore; Brett Favre is seriously considering a return to the NFL, and it seems as though the Vikings are the number one suitor. Aside from the obviousness that seeing Favre in purple would be utterly shocking, it makes me think that the Vikings would become a popular pick to win the Superbowl. Read more
