Magic Falling Apart

NBA/After being up 2-1 in the series and giving up a 14 point lead last night to lose, the Orlando Magic find themselves behind the 8-ball.  Now down 3-2, Orlando must scrape together some sort of confidence and game plan to stop the momentum the Celtics have built over the past two games.  Today, Dwight Howard openly criticized his team, and his coach, for the lack of a solid game plan in game five.  Howard actually has a good point. NBA Playoffs Never Better

nbaplayoffs091The NBA Playoffs this year have been quite astonishing on many levels.  Long overtime games, clutch shooting, and flagrant fouls are just some of the notes.  I can’t remember a time in sports where so much action took place in one sport over a relatively short period of time.  Let’s examine some of the post-season drama. Boston is in Trouble

picimg_celtics_vs_magic_1d23

The Boston Celtics better come back down to Earth rather quickly after that improbable seven-game series against Chicago.  Not only did they take way too long to beat a young, mediocre Bulls team, but they probably wore themselves out to a point where Orlando might just waltz out to a quick 2-0 (even 1-1 would be big) series lead before Rondo can even pick up a flagrant foul.  I don’t think Boston has enough left in the tank, or a deep enough roster, to compete with the Magic.  Here’s why: Read more

  • The Mavs just ousted the Spurs in the first round??  What the hell is going on?? Well, I’ll tell you what, it’s starting to show that the Spurs may be on the decline. I know nobody wants to admit it, but they aren’t the same team they used to be. Sorry. The supporting cast is just not as good. Sure, injuries hurt this team, but there is more to it when you lose in the first round.

  • Paul Pierce actually showed me that he is one of the most clutch players in the NBA.  After last year, I wasn’t sure how much credit he deserved for the Celtics’ success.  With his performance in the clutch last night, I have no more questions about his abilities.  He has, without a doubt, the best fall away elbow jumper in the league.  By my count, he hit five of them throughout the fourth quater and overtime, three in overtime alone.  Without KG, and Ray Allen who had fouled out with seven minutes left, Pierce is going to have to step up like this again and again is Boston wants a shot at another title.

  • While Dan has handed over the Eastern Conference I wouldn’t do that quite yet. Same with the West. Denver is playing really well and you never know what could happen.

Dan says:

  • Ray Allen single handedly kept the Celtics alive last night after hitting a fade-a-way three to win the game with two seconds left.  I just want to say that I think Boston looks terrible on defense and is going down either this series or next.  Congrats Cleveland on being the Eastern Conference champs…

The WrapUp

The NBA playoffs are off and running with some great games thus far.  The one that surprised me most was Chicago @ Boston.  Not only was I shocked that the Bulls won, but I couldn’t believe a defensive minded team let a rookie score nearly 40 points.  It’s pretty obvious to me that without KG, Boston is in big trouble.  Their defense will always be worse without Garnett in the middle as he is a tremendous player and leader.  This leads me to think back to last season and want to give KG all the credit for making the Celtics champions.  Someone else better step up soon to set the tone on defense before they get bounced in the first round.
