Phil Apparently Choked
Well, this would somewhat constitute our first post in this new style correct? The nerves are running through my veins. Here we go:
Mr. Jeff Passan decided to be the one to hit us all with “reality” today.
“Phil Mickelson is not yet the most choketastic of the chokeriffic choking dogs who choke in almost every chokeable situation. He’s just close.”
After making up a few words, Passan has lost me. What dogs are he talking about? What constitutes a chokeable situation? What the hell is chokeriffic?
“At major championships, there is one winner and a bunch of losers, and Mickelson again found himself a loser.”
So, how does this make him a choker?
“He missed a 3-foot putt on No. 15 and bogeyed. He missed a 5-foot par putt on No. 17. Vamoose went his chance, same as it has so many other times, and he ended up two strokes behind the 4-under Glover.”
Fair enough, he should have made a few putts I assume.
Ricky Barnes entered Monday leading the tournament at 7-under. By the 12th hole, he was down to 1-under and ostensibly done. Tiger Woods, always lurking, never mounted a run and finished at even. David Duval could’ve won, and same with Ross Fisher, or Hunter Mahan, and none could muster an even-par day.
Each one of those guys choked just as bad. Tiger had just as good of a chance come Monday, so why are we singling out Phil?
“Which left Mickelson as the conqueror.”
Why? Because people cheer for him? Duval had just as good of a chance as the conqueror.
“People are going to remember this Open for two things: the rain and the way Phil Mickelson crapped out – again –”
More memorable to me will be Phil actually making the cut in his situation, and the leaders going into round four seriously choking by shooting plenty over par that gave Phil any chance to begin with. Just because you get second doesn’t mean you choked. He had a few chances and missed. So did, 99.9% of the field. Phil deserves better.
