MLB.tv Not Living Up To The Hype

mlb_tvYesterday, if you were following our Twitter (Follow, Follow, Follow!) you would have seen me say that MLB.tv was very intriguing and was considering ordering it. As a Tigers fan who lives in Madison, this would be an amazing way to see games. There was an article on Gizmodo explaining all the great features that were included this year. I thought to myself that, while expensive, the program would be well worth it if I could get to see Verlander get creamed on opening day. In the end, I decided to wait it out and make sure I didn’t spend $100 on a whim.

The feedback was less than flattering for MLB.com. When searching through the comments, I found just one that actually was positive. Oh, boy, this is not looking good. Here are just a few comments from last night.

“paying mlb.com, but using espn’s gamecast, sweeet.”

“$110 worth of garbage, cant watch anything and then as soon as i open it it shows me all the scores after it gives me an error that i cant watch, thanks for ruining another opening day”

“Maybe some of these deep pocketed executives can come and tell my 12 year old son why he can’t watch his favorite team. WHAT A SCAM!!”

It was actually pretty entertaining. Now, after spending a while thinking it over I decided that internet message boards are always a little dramatic, and it is usually just a few people complaining when the majority are fine. Also, there is no way the MLB doesn’t fix this soon. In any case, is there anyone out there who is having problems? Or, on the other hand, anyone who has it working fine?

I still can’t decide whether to dish out the money. It’s tough to predict if I would be willing to sit in front of my computer to watch enough games to make it worth it. There are some really cool features like watching four games at once and getting live look-ins when your fantasy player is up to bat, but is that really necessary? Time will tell, but maybe you could sway me one way or the other.

Those folks may want to update their Apple IIe as I have had no major issues with MLB.TV this year. In fact, watching the team Obama and I share allegiances with in its home opener right now – Go ChiSox!! The quality is fantastic. It might even cause me to quit smoking since I’ll never leave my desk for a break during a game.

That’s good to know. I have definitely heard competing opinions on whether it works or not. The more good things I hear, however, the more likely it is for me to get it. Do I really need to watch four games at once? Well, no, but it is pretty awesome!

The best is the picture-in-picture for fantasy alerts. I watch a couple of my hitters in the Boston game when they came to the plate and didn’t miss a moment of the ChiSox. I’d imagine if Brian Cashman didn’t put CC Sabathia on the trading block after one bad Opening Day start, then I could stand a few intermittent issues for MLB.TV.
