And Steroids Are Back…

…stronger than ever.  The beginning of the end is here folks.  The 2003 list is slowly leaking as we all assumed it eventually would.  Great.

Here we go … Lawyers with “knowledge of the results” of MLB’s 2003 steroid tests says that both Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz are among the players who tested positive for performance enhancing drugs.

What’s there to say anymore? It’s not like it’s surprising I guess. In all seriousness, I don’t really care. It doesn’t affect me, but it still sucks to see our ideas actually come true. Great.

Deadspin Story

Lifetime Bans Mean 20 Years?

Look, I really couldn’t care less one way or the other in terms of how it affects my life, but the ESPN story about Bud Selig considering the reinstatement of Pete Rose confuses me.

“I think a lot of the guys feel that it’s been 20 years now for Pete, and would lean toward leniency and time served,” an unnamed Hall of Famer said, according to the Daily News.

There are a couple of issues. One, he was banned. Period. That’s the way it is. He did something that was awful, gambling on games, and the league chose to take action. Why is this even up for discussion? Two, if he is reinstated and consequently voted in then we are going to have great controversy in baseball. Suprise!

We will have to spend a year debating which is a worse offence, steroids or gambling. I can see it on sports radio right now. I don’t want to hear that debate. Let’s just save our energy by upholding the original ruling rather than feeling bad for the guy.

Let’s Add To NL Sucks Sentiment

Wow, the media couldn’t put much more stock into the whole “the AL hasn’t lost in so long” thing could they? We are loving it so much that we get some awesome, if not stuck up answers from the some of the AL players. Of course, these answers aren’t really an issue since nobody cares about the all-star game really. They asked if the player remembered the last time the NL won.

“You know,” said Joe Nathan, who might have recorded the biggest out of the AL’s 4-3 win Tuesday, “I really can’t.”

Good answer, don’t even try to guess. Thanks for playing.

“I think it was in 1997, wasn’t it?” guessed the MVP of this game, Carl Crawford, a guy who made us proud by at least getting within a year.

HAHA! Oh Carl, you guessed and got it wrong. That’s classic right there. Or not. Maybe it’s just because the players don’t keep tabs on all-star games when they were 15 years old!

“The last time they won one,” he (Greinke) wondered, “who played in it?”

Another great example of how this question is hard only because nobody cares.

“We came here on a mission,” said the greatest closer of all time of his apparently omnipotent AL All-Stars. “And that mission was accomplished.”

Gag me. It’s not that I don’t commend the AL for winning so many in a row, it’s just that it is an All-Star game. Omnipotent? Mission accomplished? I would love to hear an honest opinion of how hard these players really work for the All-Star game. I could be wrong and they practice with each other for 24 straight hours, but, chances are, the AL continues to just get lucky and this has nothing to do with which league is better. (Except for in an exhibition game once per year)

Prince Fielder Creates Amazing Headlines!

I’ll be honest, I’m not a huge Home Run Derby fan. It’s alright, but when I have to listen to Chris Berman to get “back” 600 times, it gets a little annoying. In any case, here is SI.com’s take on the derby. Let’s dive in shall we?

it may seem the wrong prince is wearing the crown of Home Run Derby champion.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Wow, that is a good one. Almost as good as these great creative headlines.

Prince of Pop [ESPN]

The Power’s Out [FoxSports]

King of Homers; Prince Reigns Supreme [MLB]

Crown Prince [Yahoo]

Prince of Thieves [ESPN]

Yeah, that’s right. ESPN has a knack for having a problem deciding which overused, dumb pun they want to use. So, they put one on the front and on the MLB section. Anyway, now that our great headlines are out of the way, let’s head back to the article.

But Prince Fielder, not Prince Albert, won,

Thanks for clarifying that for me?

If there was a down note to the night, it is that while Hamilton’s heroics last season evoked one of the great personal stories of all time, Fielder’s triumph calls attention to a different personal tale.

Well, you are responsible for it being an issue. The media is the only outlet that still cares about Cecil and Prince’s relationship. We’ve been there, done that. It sucks, but doesn’t concern me anymore.

But when asked if he had spoken to his father, he answered with a polite but fast, “No.”

Oh, man. That would have been sooooo cool!! I mean if he had, it would have been one of the great personal stories of all time. Now? Well, the Prince has dethroned the king (nice eh?)…until later today when we get to hear how great Albert Pujols is another hundred times!

Ryan Braun Not Making Friends

Our “Sports Figure Of The Day” on Monday was Brewers Leftfielder Ryan Braun because he told the press that Milwaukee GM Doug Melvin needs to make some moves. I thought it was bold, reasonable, and awesome at the same time. Well, Mr. Melvin disagrees.

“It was inappropriate for him to say what he said, and I’m not happy about it,” an upset Melvin said Monday in a telephone interview. “To make the statements he made and also get on his teammates like that, it was irresponsible on his part. It just ticked me off.”

I wish I could have seen him actually say this becaues it sounds like a Looney Toons character. In any case, obviously Melvin is not happy. The next sentence kind of hurts the validity of his sentiments though. The short article explained why Braun might have been right to complain.

After the Brewers lost, 8-2, Sunday to the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field to drop three of four games there, Braun implored Melvin to make a trade for a pitcher as soon as possible.

Losing three of four to a division rival, one that is really struggling, is probably a pretty good reason to complain. I understand that the GM never wants his players to speak out against personnel decisions, but I stand behind Braun. He is speaking the truth, that’s all. It seems that Melvin just can’t handle it.

More Fun With MLB Power Ranking Comments

This may become a weekly post because there is always something fun to mention when it comes to comments concerning power rankings. This week’s fun comes from Ginika and his post “OMG is it just me or is this guy bias for Rays.” Ooo, it has a nice mysterious ring to it right?

okay people honestly this guy put the Rays at #4 ahead of the yankess who are 1.5 games ahead of them in the standings…umm can i ask why plz?

Yes, you can, and thanks for asking so politely! Well, the power rankings are not based on the standings so can you give me a new argument plz?

and yes they have 6 games in a roww yea but Yankees have won 5 soo it makes no sense to put them ahead of yanks

Well, if we were going by that logic, the Rays are better right now correct? They have more in a row.

nd then when it comes to the Cardinals we just got Mark DeRosa and he drops ussss 7 spots in the rankings haha wow just cause of 2 games since the derosa trade haha..

Mark DeRosa hasn’t produced any wins haha so there’s no basis to say the Cardinals are better yet haha…

i wanna make a bet to anyone that after this week in the power rankings.. the cardinals will be ranked 8th and yankees will be ranked 4th or 3rd

Umm…okay, I’ll bet you I guess, that sounds like a fun guessing game. After reading this I really want the Cardinals to drop to like 16 next week just to see reactions. Maybe I’m weird, but it’s comments like these that makes me happy that I’m perfect and never say anything stupid!

MLB Power Rankings Bring Fun Comments

On this great Wednesday, we see the power rankings over at CBSsports.com placing the Rays at number three.  It seems as though Cubs fans are rather upset about this.  Here is commenter C-Lo and his title “What A Joke.”  Not a very funny one I guess.

This guy has the Rays at three and the Cubs at fifteen because of potential? How is this analysis of the season?

Well, it isn’t.  Power Rankings are there for entertainment as who he thinks is the best team.  The standings show you an analysis of the season.

I thought it is supposed to be what has actually happened DURING THE SEASON?

Look at the standings.

Yes the Rays have had a lot of injuries and some players have not lived up to potential, but being only three games over .500 does not make you the third best team in baseball!

How the hell do you know this? The writer, Larry Dobrow, didn’t say that them being three games over .500 made them third best.

All things being equal, the Cubs have a stronger team than the Rays.

Well, the Cubs are 34-33, and the Rays are 37-35. So, according to Mr. C-LO’s logic earlier, we see that the Rays are clearly a stronger team.  Of course, this commenter would use a subjective opinion to combat this statement, which would be like making power rankings.  Funny The Way It Is, a commenter who hates the idea of “potential” using it in his own opinion.

Manny Goes Hitless, Can See The Ball

Manny played his first game in the minors last night for the Isotopes! I missed out, but this story comes from SI.com:

He played four innings and was hitless in two at-bats.

Uh-oh, that’s not very good.

“He looked good,” Isotopes manager Tim Wallach said. “Talking to him after, he said he saw the ball well. He felt good. Those are the two important things.”

Wait, what? If those are the two important things, he utterly failed at one of them! Manny may feel good, but you may want to get a hit before you say that you are  seeing the ball well.

The First Home Run Replay Casualty is Here

baseball_umpire_2004

It was bound to happen eventually, and I’m glad it did. The first replay reversal that took a home run away occured last night, and there is nothing wrong with that. I love that we are finally using the technology that the league is capable of. I have said it before, and I’ll say it again. The “human element” of the game is only cool when it doesn’t ultimately and directly affect the outcome of the game. In this case, that supposed home run could have been huge. Read more

ESPN Banning Selena Roberts

alex_rodriguez1According to the NYPost, author of “A. Rod” has been banned by ESPN. This isn’t very surprising, and it really wouldn’t be news if it wasn’t for the the fact that it is ESPN strutting it’s power around. As I look at it, ESPN seems to be a crying teenage girl who was jealous that Roberts talked to other sources before ESPN. And we should feel bad for them. On to the quotes! Read more

Man-Ram is a Moron

2Let me start by saying this, Manny Ramirez has wasted all of our time.  He has spent way too much time holding out for contracts and being “Manny,” and we’ve all watched intensely with every change in his strange, illustrious career.  Well, now we all know that his career is completely tainted and ruined by this one negative test. Do Not Add Games To The World Series

borasthinksI guess some people feel like baseball should last into December. The latest suggestion to come out of agent Scott Boras’ mouth is to extend the World Series to a five out of nine game series. In his mind, this is somehow “modernizing” the game. To me, it is worthlessly adding more pointless games. It is no secret that most of the major sport’s schedules are way too long concerning the playoffs. The NBA lets their players take two days off for each game! I just don’t see how adding more games to the MLB Playoffs would add any intrigue to the games. Read more
